I managed to eat a two-flames-hot plate of pineapple fried rice without my eyes watering. I will defeat my northern European heritage yet!My friend and I chose to see Walk The Line. I've been a fan of Johnny Cash's music practically my whole life, but I didn't know much of the details of his life. The smattering I did know I was able to gel with the bits that were depicted on screen.I heard Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon both learned to play their instruments and sang their own parts. I must say I was impressed. While their singing registers weren't exactly the same, they did well in imitating Johnny Cash and June Carter. I saw this film at the Mann 6 in St. Louis Park, near Excelsior and Hwy 100. I'd never been to that theater before, which has a 2-down, 4-up screen setup. Stadium seating and a comfortable temperature were among its advantages. I didn't try the snackbar, but it looked well-stocked. Not a bad little place. Comments

Nate:The Children's Theater production of "Reeling" based on the lifes work of Buster Keaton opens this weekend. It is a silent movie on stage using some gags taken directly from his films. I have a VERY small role in it, but that gave me the chance to watch it last night. I have to say that it is one of the most unique theater expieriences I have had in a long time. Tremendous physical acting, wonderful music, and a folly artist on stage. How could you go wrong?I recommend that people of all ages check this show out. It is short, only 55 minutes long, so if you take the bus the transfer will still be good when you get out ;) The acting is absolutly incredible. The guy they nabed to play the "buster" role is spot on. He even looks a bit like him. I laughed and stared in wonderment the entire time. Please come and support this very different work. You will be glad you did. Comments
JasonT:Homocore is hosting a short film festival tonight at the Bryant Lake Bowl. The Bearded Child Film Festival is at 7pm tonight, doors open at 6. Erica:The Star Tribune's Nightwatch section tells you where to eat after bar time. JasonT:I'm going to see Jamie Cullum at the Fitzgerald Theater on 12 March. I've never been to that venue, but I did see him at the Fineline about a year ago. The place was packed for that show and my friends and I were stuck in the back. For this show, I have tickets in the second balcony, but I'm not sure what row. Hopefully it's at the front of the second balcony, and I'll have a good view. Tickets went on sale today at noon, and sadly, I missed the Cities 97 presale yesterday, because I didn't keep a close enough eye on my e-mail. By the time I saw it, they had sold all the presale tickets. Alas. Also, Lewis Black is coming to Mystic Lake in March. I've never seen a performance there, but may have to check it out for Lewis. It'll be a nice lead-in to Jon Stewart hosting the Oscars. I'm actually looking forward to it this year. Comments

I had no idea they were even considering voting on this again. But...I guess...okay? What are some other cities in Ramsey county where one can go smoke in a bar now if one were so inclined? Nate:The Star Trib had an article today talking about the removal of the Peanuts characters from the Mall of America. What?!?!?!? How silly is that? Without a neat theme, that park is DOOMED. Supposedly the owners of the mall are going to be making an announcement "soon" regarding a new partnership. Many rides are not gonna be affected, but I am curious as to what they are going to call the Giant Kite Eating Tree once it has been repainted. Mostly, I'm just sad to see it the characters go. The article talks about how good a fit they were. I am a huge fan of the Peanuts mostly because they are home grown. It was neat to have a unique park that fit it's surroundings.Maybe this will give the mall a chance to reinvent the whole thing from the ground up. Right now, they are going to call it the Park at the MOA. LAME!!! They have to come up with something better. They also need to include a few more thrill rides. I understand the need to make it family friendly, but the truth of the matter is it is young adults and the 20-30 year old set that has money to spend frivolously on stuff like this. I, personally, wouldn't pony up the dough to get an unlimited ride wrist band. I also very rarely spend any money on single ride "points". It just isn't all that interesting to me. Raise the roof a little and add a free fall. How about an underground high speed coaster? Maybe they need to hire some ex-imagineers from Disney... Comments
JasonT:Tomorrow is Wednesday, and I know everyone is always wondering to themselves, "What do I do on a Wednesday night?" Well, do I have answers for you!I've already written about Transmission at the Hexagon with DJ Jake Rudh. Here's another alternative, which I've known about for awhile, but only experienced for the first time last week.Wednesday night, DJ Terrance spins at Jet Set, a martini bar in the warehouse district. It's just down the block from Theatre de La Jeune Lune, and it might look like it's closed. The tinted windows don't let much of the already dim light out, but the atmosphere inside is very relaxed. The decor is minimal and the drinks are tasty, although a little on the expensive side. Their cosmos are worth it, though!Terrance spins some space-age lounge with a clubby edge, like Mancini's Baby Elephant Walk mixed with a techno beat. Some of the best stuff I've heard out for awhile.The address is 115 N 1st St, so just west of 1st and 1st. It's worth hunting for. Comments
Greg:We hit the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse game on Friday, and it was awesome!I’ve never actually watched a lacrosse game before, but luckily announcer Rusty Kath, also the St. Paul Saints announcer, had mini-videos that ran throughout the game to explain the random questions most of us in the crowd had. I really enjoyed all the overheard comments in our section in the realm of, "Well I think it's this," and "It must be a penalty," and "That was cool. I don't know what you call that, but that was cool."It's like hockey with a shot clock and the same brutal crosschecks. Plus you're allowed to hit people with your stick! Even though they lost, it was very cool and tickets are extremely cheap compared to other TC pro sports. And it was nice the game got over by 10 so I could still hit a downtown St. Paul concert AND hit a bar afterward (where ironically enough, ESPN was replaying the Swarm game from earlier that evening).If only the Xcel Center didn't charge $5.75 for a 12 oz beer. Nate:I just got an email today announcing a new film being shot here this spring. They are going to cast almost everyone from the talent pool here in the Twin Cities. How cool is that? No word yet as to who exactly is making this film. Might just be another independent film. The point is, there have been A LOT of movies being made here in our cities as of late. Two zombie flicks just wrapped last fall, I was an extra in a romantic comedy last summer, and "The People's Movie" shot in a few locations around Minnesota. North Country was a big profile film shot in Minnesota staring Charlize Theron.I want to see more. We already have a booming theater community, would it be so hard to ramp up the movie production? What we really need is a few sound stages. Put them out in Anoka or some other silly suburb (no offense, Anoka). We have a great amount of different landscapes to shot in the near vicinity. I think Minnesota would be a very viable location for filming. Now we just need a backer... Comments
